Organizational Behaviour Based on “The Intern Movie”
People behave differently in an organization. “The Intern” movie is a typical example of a film covering organizational behaviour of employees (McCue, 2014). The movie features the day-to-day activities of an organization which is made up of employees with both various loci of control. Ben Whittaker joins the organization called About the Fit at the age of seventy years. He is among the four interns hired as a result of the company’s community outreach program. Ben is a retired executive who used to work for a phone book company in the same place About the Fit operates. With his many years of practical experience dealing with people and his wits, he wins over the entire team in the organization. His main task is to win over the Chief Executive Officer, Jules Ostin whom he is supposed to work with.
Employees in About the Fit have different types of locus control. Jules, for instance, believes that the success of the company revolves around her. As the founder of the organization, she firmly believes in micromanagement (Camden, 2015). She micromanages all workers and she feels uncomfortable when Ben comes in as her assistant although the company approved hiring of elderly interns. Since she believes that the success of About the Fit mainly depends on her efforts, she has internal locus of control. Ben, on the other hand, wants the best out of all employees. He aims to make the working environment great for every person involved. In fact, Ben goes as far as risking his life to save the reputation of Jules. Such commitment is characteristic of somebody who believes in teamwork and success from all people. Ben is a good example of a person with external locus of control since he attributes the success or failure of their operations on external factors. Jules also believes that her actions changed her marital relationship (Lodge & Lodge, 2017). The way she handled her marriage and her work estranged her husband. Jules worked hard to regain her marriage.
Perceptive screening is another inherent theme in the movie “The Intern”. Many people in the movie tend to see their perspective as the best option while ignoring the thoughts of other people. For instance, when Jules learns from her deputy Andrew Rannells that the company intended to introduce an assistant through the senior intern program, she took it as an insult. Her internal assessment and belief system thought that she needed no assistant. On the other hand, Andrew Rannells believes that Jules needed an assistant to ease her job burden. It turned out that Ben helped Jules beyond her imagination. When Ben overhears other employees talking about the possible hiring of a new CEO, he feigns deafness to get all details. He later helps Jules to attain psychological stability about her marriage and work which finally helped her retain her position as CEO (Dishman, 2017). The movie clearly explains that selective screening based on any factors is dangerous. Decisions need objectivity instead of perception. The intern comes out as the most experienced expert who shapes the operations of the organization and the success of the characters like Jules within and outside (Lodge & Lodge, 2017).
