The recent crackdown on undocumented people living in the United States of America by the Donald Trump administration has sparked public interest and debate. In one of the articles which appeared on The New Yok Times on 24th October, 2017, Viviana Andazola Marquez explained the pain of turning her dad to the immigration services accidentally. Vivian, a senior at the Yale University, is the eldest of the four children whom her father has raised in the United States of America since 1998 when he first entered the country as a construction worker. Although he is a law abiding citizen who pays taxes and is the father of four American citizens, Vivian’s father, Mr. Marquez, faced the blunt of the new immigration stringent measures enforced by the current regime (Marquez, 2017).
According to Vivian, she offered to drive her father to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Centennial, Colorado for a normal visit to file documents. The documents would help her father to become an American citizen legally. The father was excited of the visit because it was the surest way of becoming a documented citizen. Vivian offered to drive her father because of the mixture of excitement and anxiety. She did not know that she was handing over her dad to the immigration officers who would end up locking him up. Mr. Marquez was detained waiting possible deportation proceedings.
The duo accompanied with their lawyer arrived at the immigration services office with all supporting evidence. Instead of filing the documents, the immigration officials told them that the petition to have Marquez documented will take place on another day. After some consultations amongst the immigration officers, their demeanor changed and the room was filled with uncertainty. The officials told Vivian to leave the room and took custody of her dad while she moved outside. The lawyer later told Vivian about incident and the sad news that her dad would be detained until investigations were concluded.
The current article is in line with the unit we have been studying. People have always moved to other countries for various reasons such as the quest for jobs, political instability, wars and forced immigration. Immigration laws regulations are set to regulate the conditions that must be met by people moving into the United States from other countries. The immigration conditions are set in place with respect to the prevailing political, economic and historical factors. Immigrants are accepted to the United States after a thorough vetting process which ascertains their origin, purpose and criminal backgrounds.
The issues of immigration follow the historical and political patterns of the world’s history. In the United States, tough immigration rules were enforced following the recent terrorist threats which have plagued the country in the last two decades. According to the arguments presented by the government, people from certain countries, people with criminal backgrounds and people having links with terrorists should not be allowed to enter the United States. They cannot be allowed settlement because they are a threat to social and national security. The U.S. also restricts immigration of certain groups of people on economic grounds. As part of the Trump administration’s regulations, people who should be allowed to immigrate to the U.S should invest at least $5000 in the economy or offer skilled labor in relevant industries.
Current immigration laws and regulations tell us that the United States government is trying to be careful on immigrants. The government is overly protective of its citizens from criminals who immigrate to the U.S. The historical justification of the regulations may not be applied in Vivian’s father’s case since he has been living in the country for more than 18 years. Vivian’s father has been a law abiding citizen without any criminal offences. In fact, the article states that he pays tax and engages in lawful activities in the construction industry. The fact that he was detained by the government which should protect him from external aggression is ironical. The fact that Vivian’s father has four children born in the United States makes it hard for him to be deported. In case he is deported, his children will remain without a bread winner.
In my opinion, the current crackdown on undocumented Americans is likely to cause future civil unrest in the United States. The government should make the process of documenting all immigrants who are already in the country before enforcing stringent immigration regulations on new immigrants. For a student like Vivian, her studies in ethnicity, race and migration seem meaningless since the existing policies cannot help her father. Furthermore, stopping people from immigrating into the United States cannot prevent terrorism. Evidence suggests that some terrorists are born and brought up in the U.S. In my opinion, the government should disseminate knowledge on racial co-existence and allow people from other countries to migrate after conducting background checks.
