The internet is a great platform where most people interact and share different ideas and information. However, it poses a lot of risks to the minors when they are left on their own to explore the internet world. Some harmful and illegal content nowadays is all over the internet (Mellor, 2005). There are also ways to curb this harm from affecting our children (Owens, Behun, Manning & Reid, 2012).
Pornographic films and materials are readily available on the internet and therefore the children can easily access them (Mellor, 2005). Most children have got their own mobile phones and also family desktops which are always connected to the internet making it easy for them to view any content that they want.
Internet bullying has also become rampant as minors interact on the social media especially Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram and others. Here, people howl insults and blackmail others. The minors therefore end up emulating this ill behavior and become morally decadent (Owens, Behun, Manning & Reid, 2012).
Unhealthy dating sites are common on the internet Some people who are ill-minded tend to seek unhealthy relationships with the minors and mostly end up exploiting them by sharing pornographic materials and abusing them when they happen to meet.
Internet games create a lot of fun, interactions and education to some extent. However, some display violence and sexual misconduct in between them. As the naïve minors keep on venturing into different games they acquire the ill behaviors (Mellor, 2004).
The social networks are misused in several ways whereby some children may end up sharing personal information which can be used to bully or blackmail them. Some share family events and locations which can be used by harmful strangers to locate and harm them.
In order to safeguard the children from internet harm, adults and all people in charge of the children should use some of the following remedies. Firstly, parents should always seek to know whatever apps their children are using to access the internet and sensitize them on the impacts of the same (Mellor, 2004). Secondly, minors should be warned against interacting with strangers on the social media. Thirdly, privacy should be highly encouraged when it comes to the internet especially on social status and location. Fourthly, the children should be made aware that whatever they post on the internet is permanent and always be retrieved. Fifthly, responsible parents and adults should teach the children about caring for one another so that they don’t post any information or ill things about others. Lastly, adults should always be responsible in keeping the minor’s behavior and whatever they venture into on the internet in track by taking an active oversight role.
